Challenge
The last time Cornell football didn't finish in the bottom four of the Ivy League standings was 2005. Design a uniform which which celebrates Cornell University, empowers the players through enclothed cognition, and heralds a return to winning ways, thereby initiating a culture change.
Solution
No longer the league's doorstep, the Cornell Football team boasts uniforms which embody their bear mascot and serve as a call to action to rise up and recolor the Ivy League in Big Red. Below is an analysis of popular college uniforms, dissecting them to understand what makes them great, and a reflection on how the Cornell brand may differentiate itself while maintaining a connection with its storied history.
Market Research
The best football uniforms have a central inspiration around which each facet of the design orbits. This central inspiration, whether it be a mascot, landmark, or tradition, permeates every touch point of the uniform like a hub and spoke model.
Market Positioning
While Cornell's football program may be older, they no longer have the monopoly on uniform design: the look of its traditional uniform with broad stripes and color blocking red/white is not unique. Indeed, the design has been copied and been made more synonymous with football programs like Nebraska, Wisconsin, and the University of Houston.
